Italian cakes to sweeten the whole Christmas season

Gilber Panettone

Pandoro, Panettone or Panforte? Italian Christmas cakes to taste all through December.

Italians will be gifting their Pandoro, Panettone and Panforte all through December, eating generous slices of Pandoro with cafe latte for breakfast or a piece of Panettone mid-afternoon with a glass of Vin Santo.

The treats taste like cakes, but are actually classed as sweet breads (‘pane’ means bread in Italian). Pandoro and Panforte are made from dough rather than cake batter so no need to feel guilty about eating them at any time of day. They’ve become increasingly popular in UK supermarkets over the years, but if you’ve yet to try an artisanal version like the ones we stock in Amaretto then do give it a shot – they are quite different to the mass produced versions. Crafted with picky customers in mind, they have to stand out amongst a very crowded Italian market so they really are something special. But which to choose?

Pandoro: a melt in the mouth classic

Our favourite of the three treats is without doubt the Pandoro (‘bread of gold’). The tall star-shaped cake is melt in the mouth, light yet in no way dry. It gets its colour from egg yolk, and its appeal lies in its simplicity. Pandoro originally hails from Verona and is a sweet lacy treat covered with icing sugar; delicious.

Panettone: shake it up

For many, the taste of Italian Christmas is the domed Panettone (large bread). The candied treat is wrapped in that brown and gold paper from Milan and can be varied (unlike Pandoro which is always plain). This year we have a variety of flavours in stock: pistachio, chocolate, orange; they are all delicious. We also have a great gluten-free version.

Panforte: great for after dinner

The small round, harder discs of fruit and nuts wrapped in yellow or pink paper are Panforte (‘strong bread’). They hail from Sienna (like the light egg-white, almond and vanilla cakes Ricciarelli) but are eaten all over Italy at Christmas time, and for good reason. They  are filled with Christmasy spices and honey and are slightly chewy. Melt in the mouth sugar paper gives an extra pop; addictive. We also have a gluten-free free Panforte that is almost more delicious than the original. All in all this little cake is  great for an after dinner treat, and goes very well with Christmas spirits and wine – lovely after a cheese plate.

All of the above cakes are wrapped in card in Christmassy colours. They make a lovely addition for under the tree, to a hamper, or just to eat throughout the Yule-tide season – alongside your classic mince pie of course.

Each year Fabrizio trawls his Italian artisanal suppliers to find the most delicious treats wrapped in paper and ribbon and they make for lovely presents. We have lots of chocolates and traditional sweets for you to choose from, led by the Italian classics: Ricciarelli (almond cookies), Panettone, Panforte and Pandoro (Christmas cakes), Torrone (nougat) and Cantuccini (hard almond biscuits perfect for dipping in alcohol!).

Italian Christmas Cakes

Italians will be gifting their cakes all through December, eating generous slices for breakfast, or mid-afternoon with a glass of Vin Santo. The cakes have become increasingly popular in UK supermarkets over the years, however if you’ve never tried an artisanal cake, we advise you to give it a try. They’re a proper treat and they look great too.

Our favourite is a good Pandoro (‘bread of gold’). For many though, the taste of Christmas is Panettone (large bread), the candied treat wrapped in that brown and gold paper – yet what about the round, hard discs of fruit and nuts; Panforte (‘strong bread’). Each has their own merits.

All this Christmas food looks great in a hamper. We’ve been running a successful personalised gift hamper service for some years now. You only pay for the food that you choose and the hamper materials (£4.95). There is no extra mark-up. Christmas deli cheese and ham board

Looking to beat the crowd? Get ahead and order fresh food for Christmas or New Year now.

In the final week before Christmas, our shop gets very busy as everyone comes in to order cheese, olives, salami, hams and all the other lovely food that makes for a lovely Christmas spread.

If you’d like to, this year you can pre-oder food from Amaretto Deli using our online shop. We offer food for click and collect or delivery in NR1-NR7; it’s easy to do and you can specify your ideal delivery slot on the delivery note section of the order. We are open up to and including Christmas Eve, and then re-open on Tuesday 30th for New Year’s.

Do browse our cheese category to find your cheese board selection; including melt in the mouth gorgonzola and the sheep’s milk cheese, manchego.  This semi-cured cheese is delicious and a tasty choice for those who can’t tolerate cow’s milk. You’ll also find membrillo paste, made from quince, which is a great accompniament to your cheese board, and makes a nice change from pickles.

If you’re looking for some cured hams for your Christmas or New Year table, then browse the prosciutto, ham and salume category; here you’ll find the fragrant finochionna (fennel salami), which is addictive, laced with fennel seeds and merlot wine and is refreshingly light in flavour. There is also the classic prosciutto di Parma DOP, and the Bolognese luncheon meat, mortadella, which is always a favourite with Italians of all ages, but especially children.

In the olives, hummus and pesto category you’ll find some delicious accompaniments, and some lovely vegetable treats. We have artisinal bread-sticks, fat and juicy Gordal pitted olives, artichocke hearts and more.

Apart from the fresh food, if you’re looking for Christmas gifts, or treats for main courses, you can also browse our pasta selection to find lovely coloured pasta, our Christmas food section for cakes, chocolates, and treats, or make up a hamper for a loved one to gift yourself on Christmas day, or for us to deliver up to Christmas Eve.

Stocking fillers and secret santa gifts at Amaretto Deli, Norwich

Italian nougat, Amaretto Deli, Norwich

Looking for Christmas stocking fillers or Secret Santa gifts in Norwich?

The Amaretto Deli Christmas table is stacked full of original Italian chocolates and festive food that are decently priced and wrapped in rich colours. They make for lovely stocking fillers or Secret Santa gifts.

++ please note you can also browse for stocking fillers and secret santa gifts in our online shop: click and collect or delivery available in NR1-NR7. ++

Christmas is a time for good food, good company, and, in our opinion, thoughtful gifts that do not cost the earth. Novelty stocking fillers or Secret Santa gifts can be fun, but increasingly, it does not feel so good to fill up our homes with short-lived gifts that end up going to land-fill sooner rather than later.

As the commercial buzz hots up, one way of avoiding lots of short-lived or wasteful gifts is to invest in some really nice food.

In terms of stocking fillers, Amaretto has a number of gifts between £2.50 – £7.95 that fit the bill:

Italian nougat, stocking filler, Amaretto Deli, Norwich

Chocolate covered nougat, £2.95

The nougat is soft, the chocolate is dark and rich: and this stick makes for old-fashioned good looks in a Christmas Eve stocking. (Please note this gift is not available online).

Cunesi al Limoncello, stocking filler norwichChocolate liqueurs from the north of Italy; £7.95, assorted flavours.

These chocolates look way more expensive than they are – why not try a mixed bag full of rum, amaretto, limoncello and cherry liqueur chocolates: buy one for your colleague then one for yourself: you won’t regret it.

Caffe Leonardo, from Vinci, Tuscany

Festive packets of Leonardo Cafe, from Vinci, Tuscany, £5.00

We’ve had these gifts in the shop for years now, and people come back for them year after year. We are the only place in the country to stock this smooth and tasty Italian coffee.

These are just some examples of the smaller gifts we have on offer – we also have Torrone, panforte and lots more, all wrapped in lovely paper, and famously delicious.

All our Christmas gifts are sourced from Italy and popular; we’re pretty sure that nothing will get wasted here!

As well as this food, we also do Christmas Hampers.

See you soon!

Team Amaretto.
