Amaretto Deli is 15 Years Old this May!

Fabrizio Fiaschi, owner, serving food.

This May, we are celebrating our 15th birthday. It’s been a very challenging few years for small businesses and so we would really like to thank our staff and customers, and everyone who has supported us over the last few years in particular.

Fabrizio Fiaschi from Tuscany bought the deli formerly known as The General Store, in May 2008, transforming the deli-kitchen into one of the nation’s best-loved Italian independents with the help of a very strong team. When we won runner-up Best Deli in the national English Italian Awards in 2017, the judges praised the deli’s authenticity and delicious Italian food which remains a staple of the business.

We also stock plenty of local produce, and have focussed on keeping quality high, as well as innovating over the years, bringing in much more vegan and gluten-free food, and offering loyalty cards and student discounts in recent years. We had to move quickly during the lockdowns; that’s when we started selling online food and hampers. Now the hampers have become a really special part of the business, as have the outdoor tables.

It’s been an intense few years but we’re thriving thanks to our loyal customers, brilliant staff (past and present), and those local organisations that have helped us out including St Andrew’s Hall, Norwich City Council and the Norwich University of the Arts and their students. People really stuck with us during the pandemic and we do appreciate that. A particular mention must go to Asa Wetherell who has done great work leading the kitchen team and has worked here for thirteen years now. Our brilliant staff and customers are what make this job worth doing, the feeling of community… THANK YOU!

Hungry? Our takeaway sushi lunch box is available every Friday

takeaway sushi lunch box

In partnership with our friends at Shiki, an independent Japanese restaurant in Tombland, Norwich, we offer a delicious and filling takeaway sushi lunch every Friday alongside our other specials; all available at Amaretto Deli, 16 St Georges Street.

The sushi include salmon, tuna and delicious raw vegetables; just take your pick of your preferred box. Consisting of a healthy portion of your favourite filling surrounded by seaweed and sushi rice, the sushi is served complete with ginger, fresh wasabi, soy sauce and of course chop-sticks.

Due to the fact that the food isn’t cooked and served within minutes, the fish is cooked; so this is a different kind of experience to fresh sashimi, the sushi that consists of raw fish, but just as delicious. (It is still officially sushi – as that term actually refers to the kind of sour rice used in this kind of food, not the fish…)

Shiki is a fantastic restaurant, long beloved of foodies in Norwich, and anyone who enjoys well-made, authentic Japanese food. If you’re ever looking for a good meal, we recommend it, especially their elegant Bento boxes, or Tuesday night all you can eat buffets: perfect for a celebratory treat. Their plum wine is a great accompaniment; don’t miss out on that. All the food is beautifully served, and looks as good as it tastes. We eat there for every staff Christmas meal, and always have a brilliant time.

If you’re interested in the takeaway sushi box, please do come and see us at Amaretto Deli, 16 St Georges Street, NR1 3BA any Friday afternoon. If you’re feeling particularly keen do come close to 12.30pm, as this sushi lunch does often sell fast.

Sushi is just one of our lunches, we offer three daily specials and soups as well as sandwiches, pizza and snacks through-out the week; find out more on our take-away page.

Have a great weekend.

St Georges St, NUA & the Art of Instagram

An oil painting created by Christina Biazetti, November 2017

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We are newbies on Instagram and have been enjoying discovering all the lovely images on there. Being located just down from the NUA art school, we often have people making studies of the shop and food, whether through photography or fine art. The oil painting below has just been created by Cristina Biazetto, who shared all the different stages of painting the image on Instagram. Amazing. St George’s Street has always been a bit of a hub within this artistic part of the city and we love seeing that reflected in your images online. Please do join us if you’re on Instagram.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
