Our artisinal Italian cup of coffee doesn’t break the bank – here’s why

A board showing Amaretto Deli's take-away coffee prices

As we all know, coffee prices have soared in the UK over the last years, and there’s no sign of them coming down soon. Here at Amaretto, we have tried to pass on the bare minimum of these price rises. Now, we find that the cost of our take-away coffee is often significantly lower than many other businesses, both Indy and high-street.

This has been possible not least because we are a take-away, and so have lower overheads than coffee shops. (Though we do have some lovely outdoor tables people love to use when the weather is warm). It’s also because we import our coffee directly from an artisan company in Vinci, Tuscany. The quality is excellent, and, because the coffee comes from Italy, the price is great too. (In Italy, the cost of an espresso is still just over a euro, and their daily cappuccino around €1.50).

Why is coffee in the UK so expensive?

Yes, the cost of coffee itself has doubled across the world due to the impact of severe weather in the countries that produce coffee, as well as other global pressures. Here in the UK, though, prices of our daily Joe have risen particularly high. This is due to high fuel and energy costs, importation costs, and ever increasing business taxes and overheads. This being the case, your average high street branded latte now comes in at £3.76 this February (ours remains £2.90), and, as people try and keep costs down, Greggs has surpassed Costa as the nation’s most prevalent coffee place.

Can it be that hanging out in an Indy coffee shop is going to become a thing of the past? We certainly hope not. It’s an integral part of British culture now and so we can only hope that things get easier soon. Enjoying a coffee without feeling stressed by costs, either as owner or customer, is something we all deserve.

About our coffee: Torrefazione Leonardo Caffè

The coffee we serve you is the same delicious bean that we sell in red bags in the shop. It is a medium blend roast, 30% Robusta beans, 70% Arabica beans. It has a lovely smooth balance to it with notes of chocolate and liquorice.

Torrefazione Leonardo Caffè is roasted just along from the hill-top village where Leonardo da Vinci was born in 1452, and our Fabrizio a few years later; it is his taste of home. In operation since the sixties, the artisan producer has had decades of experience in the hard coffee drinking Italian culture. They have perfected a roasting process that eschews all chemicals and tastes as good as it looks

Make your own

Leonardo Caffè is also available to buy in the shop in either medium, strong or decaffeinated blends. We offer small or large bags, beans or ground, depending on how your habit goes. They’re suitable for espresso machines, your stovetop coffee pot or cafetière. The bags of coffee also look great; and do well in a hamper or as an original gift.

See you soon!
